YDF26 Artist 07 Q&A: Edna Santos

Where are you based, and what does your city give you creatively?

I’m based in Manchester, and I think there are opportunities available to help us develop practice and advance our careers. Manchester has many artist-led spaces, a sense of community among artists and opportunities for collaborative work. Continuously reminding me that art is something that can build together and not always individually.

How would you describe your practice if you were talking to a friend?

If I were talking to a friend of mine, I would probably describe my practice as explorative, collaborative, passionate, and embedded with cultural/pop moments.

What ideas keep coming back in your work?

I keep having the same thoughts - patterns, colours and visual storytelling aligned with the urge to create more art. The same feeling has not left my body in 10 years.

Why is collaboration important to you?

Because nothing of big importance was ever built by one person. To believe in my work is also to believe in collaboration, and for me, comes in forms of trust, listening, and making space for different ways of relating and working.

What are you excited about right now?

I’m excited about using new digital interfaces, creating art and connecting with artists. I think joining new programmes helps you become more optimistic about your work and new ideas always pop up.
