Under25Routes - Liverpool
A Day in the Life (well a morning) of Under25Routes UK Residency
After spending five weeks in Valencia in June 2016, five weeks in Lisbon in January/February 2017 the Under25Routes project finally came to the UK on the 10th June.
Although the main residency and laboratory will take place in Manchester we thought we couldn’t invite our eight young artists and their tutors over to the North of England without giving them a little bit of an experience of Liverpool, and of course The Beatles.
Luckily for us the UK residency has fallen in time with the 50th anniversary of the publishing of The Beatles most famous album - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. For which Liverpool is celebrating every song off the album with a special event, parade, artistic showing, and music - the whole gamut.
On our first Saturday we met at the foot of the steps of the Catholic Cathedral on Hope Street (or Paddy’s Wigwam as it is affectionately called by Liverpool locals). From the top of the steps came a parade for the Lovely Rita - named after the song Lovely Rita. We were then treated to a Rita Riot along Hope Street - past Liverpool institutions such as The Everyman Theatre, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (set up by Sir Paul McCartney) and finally to ginormous Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
The parade was awash with brass bands, a rock band, Lovely Rita herself and of course a small platoon of parking meter attendants. The parade was brought together by the companies Meow Meow and her Sleepless Beauties & The Kazimier.
Our UK based artists, alongside their Portuguese and Spanish colleagues had a fun riot themselves. It was the perfect way to start the UK residency, even the good British summer rain held off for the duration of the parade.
